One note I have to make about this picture: it has not been modified in any way. No color correction, no Photoshop and no J.J Abrams production credits.

Breaking With Flare

Grand Master Scott Yates (8th dan, Sin Moo Hapkido) and his students put on a very destructive breaking demonstration.

This is the picture as-is from the camera (converted from RAW to JPEG in Lightroom). The lens flare is from a camera flash across from me, which went off just as I took the picture.

I took hundreds of pictures at Karate College and if I took another thousand I doubt I could ever get this effect again in real life. Capturing rare moments like this is why I love photography.

If you came here just looking for a review of the latest Sherlock Holmes film, I’ll make it quick … it was great. I highly recommend it. Even if you’re a fan of the books I think you’ll be pleased.

But this post isn’t a general movie review. As a video producer and martial artist I found the movie utterly fascinating. More »

Wednesday was my first night back at Sajido for a two hour session … one hour with the beginner’s class, one hour in the advanced.

Boy do I need that beginner’s class.

In one week I managed to touch on all of my dormant hobbies with a manic vengance. I might even keep them going after I recover.

I just got back from my first night returning to martial arts training. I feel good, a little sore, more than a little out of practice … but very happy to be back.

Everything felt natural. Not perfect, but natural. My kicks need work, my legs don’t stretch as well as they did last year and my stances aren’t as comfortable. But self defense drills felt good: I can block, I remember to check my opponent’s elbow, I can take falls with ease.

It’s the same school I left, and it’s the same school I wanted to come back to. Tomorrow my hips will protest, but I’ll work on them later.

Well, it’s been over a year, but I’m more than ready … I’m a martial arts student again. Tomorrow night I try my hand at being a brown belt again. I’m sure my body will not be pleased, but my mind & soul are ready to get back on the mat.

I’ll spend time later explaining why I took a break and what drove me to go back. Right now I need to get those pesky Christmas ornaments out of my living room.

You know times have changes when your mom bugs you about your recent lack of blogging. She did it over the phone talking to my wife. I’ll be more worried when she starts following me on Twitter, or calling the voice mail line for my podcast.

But I didn’t come here to talk about my mother … I came here to talk about music & martial arts.
