The Joy of Owning Your Own Cold & Drafty Home
Cats + Crawlspace + Poorly Installed Ductwork = Brian in a crawlspace at 7:30am in 22 degree weather.
Suzan left the house at an unacceptable hour, needing to be in Conyers at 6:00am to carpool to a training session. That left me with her morning animal care routine, plus video work I have to finish for Tech Support. Even with all that, I should have been at work on time … that was before I noticed the temperature in my kitchen.
My bedroom … a spa. My kitchen … a meat locker. My heat pump … running like a sprinter.
Rather than use the metal foil tape approved for ductwork, my furnace ductwork was attached to the house using really big “zip ties”. These work great assuming the cats living in your crawlspace don’t try to curl up on top of the warm duct. Gravity will eventually win this battle, detaching the duct. Now I have the most comfortable crawlspace in all of Loganville … so at least I was comfortable while repairing the problem.
I shudder to think what my next power bill will look like … but at least I won’t shiver at night.

And here I was expecting a story about cats getting IN the ductwork to stay warm….
At least I know mine would do that.
That happened about four years ago … a few days after the new furnace was installed. The guys didn’t install the ducts well, and the cats crawled in. We heard a meow, looked down, and a cat was staring up at me as if to say "open this grate, I want kibble!"
Yeah, considering the fact that on top of the cable box is Kudzu’s favorite place to sit, I have no doubt our cats would love to crawl around in our duct work to get warm. The amusing part for us would be, though, all of a sudden seeing a cat fall from the ceiling, since our ducts aren’t in the floor, their all in the ceiling. "Look, honey! It’s raining cats!"
Well, Tenzing could fit in the ductwork.
Edmund…that fatass would have to lose a LOT of weight to fit into a duct anytime soon.
I do like the raining-kitties image. The sound effects would be hilarious…
