Ain’t nobody here but us chickens
So what’s new at the Geek Farm today? One toppled tree, some frozen pipes and 23 chickens.
Progress on the domestic upgrade continues. We have a tree service removing a massive dead oak that threatens to smite my power lines. Since the goats are allergic to falling trees, we have them in one of the barn stalls.
I am aware of the irony that would result by a tree killing a goat. In the real world, this tends to happen the other way around. I fear that our goats would react by stripping the landscape of every last bit of greenery to prevent any plant from towering over them, turing my lovely farm into a barren wasteland … so it’s just easier to move the goats out of the way.
After completing a new chicken pen, Suzan has filled it with chickens … 23 chickens she got from her friend Dana. Dana is moving to South Carolina, leaving Suzan with her chickens and the opportunity to sell farm-fresh eggs to a gourmet restaurant up the road. I can’t really argue with poultry that pays its own way, but I feel like an Aardman may breakout in my back yard at any moment.
I’ve had to carry buckets of water back to barn for the goats the past few mornings. The below-freezing weather caused the shutoff valve at the barn to stick shut (better than the alternative, where the pipes fill with water & burst). I’ve had to feed the past few mornings, which leaves me picking hay out of my clothes when I get to work … not something you tend to see in a computer company.
Anyway, here’s hoping Mel Gibson doesn’t fly into my chicken coop …

Apparently you need to train your receptionist, dear. Deshawn and Kirk both know to do "hay checks" in the mornings.
I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea of 23 more chickens at the Geek Farm. Oy. I’m thinking you’re going to be hosting some omelet-fests with whatever the restaurant doesn’t buy.
Mmmm… Fresh eggs…. I’ll buy some of the ones the restaurant doesn’t use! I’ve moved up from buying one dozen eggs at a time to buying 2 to 3 dozen at a time, as they mysteriously disappear very quickly from our fridge.
2-3 dozen? Yikes. What in the world are you doing with…
Wait. Do I *really* want to know?
Protein. It’s all about the protein. Having an omelet for breakfast is a better start for the day than a stack of pancakes.
Okay…once you add the dairy cows then I am going to come over and cook a feast using nothing but the readily available home stuff. I can slaughter one of the cows after milking…roast a couple of the chickens….put some mutton on.
Yep yep…sounds like a plan to me.
