Today’s News Theme: /dev/random
In today’s news … stupid schools, signs from above and sunspots get in your eyes.
First it today’s big solar storm, which may (or may not) cause power blackouts, cell phone problems, massive internet outages and/or the end of civilization as we know it.
Second is a report from the set of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of Christ”, where the actor portraying Jesus was struck by lightning. This is the second time a member of the movie’s crew has been hit by lightning during production … the second time. Of all the films where $deity has decided to be a critic, it has to be one about Jesus. Where was $deity when they were making? Mel … if you listening … this may be a sign.
And last, another moment where $deity should smack somebody with a sudden burst of electrons … a freshman has been expelled by the Fulton County School System for what she wrote in her private journal. In her private journal, which was seized by a teacher because another student was writing notes in it during class, the students had written a story about a student that dreams about killing a teacher. No specific teacher was named in the story.
Yes, she was expelled for something she wrote in private … not a specific threat, not directed at a specific person, not written for a school assignment. Even the Poet Laureate of Georgia sticks up for the girl, saying that the writing is not threatening. Now you understand why people look at home schooling their kids.
The best part of the AJC story is the photo, where the student is reading the book The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Your Civil Liberties.
Well, I’m off to learn about XML for a work-related project. Aftert that, it’s time for Tech Support.
