Japan: Sleep, Glorious Sleep
Wednesday, March 12, 2002. 6:05pm.
Tokyo Central Rail Station. Tokyo, Japan.
“Brian, wake up! We’re here.”
It figures … the minute I get comfortable and fall asleep, we get to the end of the train line. Today was another eventful travel day within Japan. The trip to Yonezawa takes three hours by train. Since we didn’t get seat reservations, much of the trip was spent standing in a crowded “general admission” car. I managed to find a seat about two hours into the return trip, squeezing myself between an older Japanese gentleman and the window. I guess I dozed off somewhere between Ueno and Tokyo Station.
Yonazawa is farther north, closer to Korea. It was slightly chilly, with several inches of snow still on the ground. We are returning earlier than expected, with the exception of one business manager. He’s staying behind for some extra meetings. The rest of are eager to return to Tokyo, hoping to get some sleep.
There will be no late meetings over drinks and dinner tonight … we’re worn out. No trip back to the office, just a taxi from the train station to the hotel. Some dinner, a little bit of TV, then sleep. Sleep would be very good right now.
